Jay Kumar Aiyer
In his brief but diverse career, Jay K. Aiyer has proven himself
a leader and innovator in the public, private and non-profit
sectors. A lawyer by training, Jay is currently Of Counsel for
the firm of Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, Williams, White & Martin
practicing public and business immigration law. A graduate of the
South Texas College of Law, Aiyer has been a licensed attorney
since 1995.
Previously he was a senior management consultant for Deloitte and
Touche, L.L.P., specializing in improving the operations of
public, educational, and non-profit institutions. While holding
Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Texas,
Aiyer's personal commitment has always been to public service.
His public service career has included work for both Senator
Rodney Ellis and Mayor Lee P. Brown, where he served as Chief of
Staff. Aiyer was the first Asian-American and youngest Chief of
Staff in the modern history of Houston. Aiyer has also given
significant time as a volunteer business consultant for the Urban
Business Initiative, mentoring small and minority business owners
to start and expand businesses in Houston. He currently serves as
a member of the Board of Directors for the Alief YMCA and the
Gulfton Youth Development Council.
Aiyer was recently elected to the Board of Trustees of the
Houston Community College System (HCCS), the third largest system
in the country and currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of
Trustees. Aiyer has been instrumental in refocusing HCCS towards
engaging with all aspects of the community and has emphasized the
vital role HCCS plays in the community, especially in terms of
workforce development and helping students prepare for their
careers.
Aiyer is the first person of Asian descent to serve on the HCCS
Board of Trustees, and only the second Asian-American currently
in elected office in Harris County. He is also the first South
Asian elected to political office in Harris County. Though born
in London, he is of Indian heritage and has lived in Houston
since the age of six. He attended public schools in the Alief and
Fort Bend Independent School Districts. Aiyer and his wife,
healthcare attorney, Nirja Sharma Aiyer, are the proud parents of
a beautiful 5-year-old daughter, Meera and 1 year old son, Naveen.
