M. Bazlul Karim, Ph.D.
Dr. M. Bazlul Karim was born in Bangladesh where he earned M.A. and B.A. (Honors) degrees from
Dhaka University. He came to the United States in 1975 and received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International
Studies (GSIS), University of Denver, Colorado. He also obtained an M.A. in International Studies from GSIS and an M.A. in
geography from Western Illinois University. Dr. Karim's research and fieldwork experience, both in the United States and
Bangladesh, extends through a period of over twenty years. He worked for various international, governmental, and
private research institutions as well as an international law firm.
Dr. Karim taught courses on international relations, comparative politics of Asia and the
Third World, and world regional geography at college and university levels. He was a recipient of the Shell International Studies Research
Fellowship for overseas doctoral research awarded by the Shell Companies Foundation, Inc., Washington, D.C.
Dr. Karim's publications include three
scholarly books. He presented numerous papers at various national and international seminars and conferences. His articles and book
reviews have been published in a number of national and international journals.
Dr. Karim received the Presidential Award from the Association of Third World Studies, Inc. (ATWS) in
recognition of his outstanding contributions to the promotion of scholarship devoted to the Third World. ATWS is the largest
professional organization in the world devoted to the study of developing countries. Dr. Karim is a life member of the
association, and was the first Web Master of the association’s web site. Previously, he had been members of International Studies
Association, Society for International Development, Association of American Geographers, American Political Science Association,
and Association for Asian Studies.
A number of publications in the U.S. and England have published Dr. Karim’s biography, which include Marquis Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in America,
Men of Achievement, International Who's Who of Intellectuals, 2000 Notable American Men and International Who's Who of Contemporary Achievement.
Besides reading, his hobbies include web site design, photography and traveling.
His memorable overseas trips have been to China, Norway, South Africa, Botswana, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands.
He has
recently retired from an international law firm and currently lives
in Florida with his wife, Dr. Jean Ellickson, a Fulbright scholar and Emerita Professor of Anthropology, Western Illinois
University.
